Old Locomotive

A D-class locomotive built in Christchurch in 1887 may soon be replaced in the yards of the Gear Meat Company at Petone. where it has Worked since 1901, by a diesel locomotive. The old locomotive was built just after a public outcry about locomotive contracts going outside the country, and was one of the first tobe built to Government order. It is thought to have run on Wellington suburban services for a period. . It still hauls up to eight insulated meat vans about the works.
