TRAIN HITS VAN
Two Men Escape Uninjured
Two men escaped with only minor bruising, which did not require medical treatment, after the van in which they were travelling was struck and overturned by a shunting train on the Tuckers road level crossing, Papanui, at 2.15 p.m. yesterday. The van rolled 48 feet after the impact, but the men were able to extricate themselves from the vehicle. which was extensively damaged. The two persons in the car were Andrew Gillespie, of 9 Checketts avenue, Halswell, and Colin David Ketch, of 245 Lake w Terrace road, Shirley. The van is owned by the ■>» Fletcher Construction Company. > It had almost cleared the rails when it was struck by the engine ' of the train, which was travelling fairly slowly towards the Papanui - station. The crossing is not controlled by warning lights or bells.
