The legless millionaire, Richard Fairey. aged 42, chief of Fairey Aviation, died after a heart attack in the South of France only a month after leaving his firm to take two years' sick leave. Like Douglas Bader, Mr Fairey had a reputation for courage for continuing to fly, although he had no legs. In his twin-engined Rapide he travelled about the world as a super-salesman for Faireys. Mr Fairey had to have his legs amputated in IMI when his ship was torpedoed in the Atlantic and he spent.six days in an open boat in sub-zero temperatures. At the time he was oh his way to America to ferry aircraft to Britain.
