EMPIRE GAMES IN 1962
The Queen Will Be Invited To Opening (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PERTH. July 31. All major world centres will in future be kept regularly posted on the progress Perth is making in preparations for the 1962 Empire Games. They all come within an international publicity network now being established to keep the world informed about the Games. which Australia will stage in Perth from November 8-17, 1962. The main items in the first Games report are The Queen will be invited to open the Games; Australia will become the first nation to stage all the events of the Empire Games in one area, because facilities will be ideally grouped in Perth; already plans are being made to ensure that there will be accommodation for everyone who comes to see the Games. New European Shot Putt Record (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) BUDAPEST, July 30. Vilmos Varju, the Hungarian shot putter, yesterday smashed the European record held by A. Rowe (Britain) on the first day of the Hungarian national athletic championships at Budapest. Varju’s put of 61£t 2Jin beat Rowe’s effort of 61ft in August last year. Fast 100 Metres By B. Cuthbert (New Zealand Press Association) SYDNEY. July 31. The Australian Olympic sprinting star, Betty Cuthbert, beat the world 100 metres time by one-tenth of a second at a Sydney sports meeting yesterday. She was timed at HJtsec to beat the world record held by Shirley Strickland (Australia) and V. Krepkina (Russia). Miss Cuthbert had a following wind, and the record Will not be recognised. It was her first real trial since she broke down at Henson Park, Sydney, on July 9.
