NOMINATION OF LODGE
Respect In U.N. Circles Press Association —Copyright; NEW YORK, July 29. The nomination of Mr Henry Cabot Lodge as the Republican Vice-Presidential candidate was regarded in New York diplomatic quarters today as a tribute to one of the most effective envoys any Government has sent to the United Nations. During seven years and a-half as the United States resident representative, Mr Lodge has attained a dominant position among delegates, unmatched, in the view of many, since the departure of Britain’s Sir Gladwyn Jebb. I Mr Lodge has greatly increased the stature of his United Nations post, which now is considered by Americans here to rank a shade higher than even the London and Paris Embassies. President Eisenhower was partly responsible for this development when he named Mr Lodge a member of his Cabinet and of the National Security Council. A senior Communist delegate commented only this week that he liked and respected Mr Lodge, whom he described as an “extraordinarily able representative of his country.” Sobolev’s Comment The Soviet Union’s permanent representative, Mr Arkady Sobolev, today called Mr Lodge, his frequent adversary, “a good man.” Mr Sobolev, who left by plane for Moscow, was reported to be suffering from heart trouble. He said he felt fine and expected to return to New York later in the year for the United Nations General Assembly ‘ meeting. In the United Nations, where the give and take of bitter cold war debate sometimes obscures the fact that the debaters are professional diplomats doing a job which does not bar antagonists from personal friendship, Mr Lodge commands respect from friend and foe alike.
