GOLF Christchurch A Wins Woodward Cup
The Woodward Cup for 1960 has been won by the Christchurch A team. Headed by the New Zealand representative R. J. Charles, Christchurch A yesterday beat Christchurch B to establish a clear lead of one and a half points over Russley A, Waitikiri and Kaiapoi. In the other matches played in this round Kaiapoi beat Russley B, and Russley A easily beat Templeton. There has been much interest throughout this competition in the performances of J. A. Mac Kay, the number one player for the Christchurch B team. In earler rounds Mac Kay beat R. C. Murray and I. B. Cromb and pressed R. E. Clements. Yesterday he again provided much of the day’s excitement with his brilliant bursts on and around the greens. This time his opponent was R. J. Charles. After eight holes Charles, playing by no means badly even by his standards, found himself 4 down. At the turn, after they had halved the short ninth in threes (Mac Kay just missing with another long putt), Mac Kay was still 4 up. He had required only 10 putts for the nine holes, and was two under scratch for the outward half. But Charles, who throughout the match hit the ball very well off the tees, had played a lovely 2 iron to the 205 yd ninth, and it was a sign of things to come. From the tenth to the finish Charles applied increasing pressure, finding the greens consistently, and Mac Kay gradually lost touch and seven holes in a row, and Charles won, 3 and 2. The top players in the match between Russley A and Templeton— K. D. Foxton and A. C. Browne — had a most interesting match in which there was never more than one hole between them. They halved the seventeenth and eighteenth to leave Foxton 1 up. Kaiapoi beat Russley B in a match which was in doubt until the last pair, I. B. Cromb and J. Broadhurst, had completed the last hole, to which they came all square. Broadhurst holed a very good putt for a somewhat venturesome half in bogey fours, but a half for Cromb was good enough to ensure victory for Kaiapoi. Results:— Christchurch A v. Christchurch B R. J.
