PELLET POWER

Pellets of uranium oxide no bigger than the sweets you buy in a roll for 6d or 1Z- are driving the N.S. Savannah. Two of these tiny fuel pellets provide the driving power for one sea mile. A total of 632,200 of these pellets have been packed and sealed in the nuclear core of the Savannah, and they will power the vessel for more than three years, while travelling 350,000 miles, equal to about 15 times around the earth at the Equator. “The public is going to be astonished at the operations of this ship,” the United States Atomic Energy Commission promises. “But it is safe to say that ships many more times as impressive are well within our concept at the present time.” In fact, experts say developments are going on so swiftly that the Savannah, today described as the ultimate in seagoing progress and comfort, might easily be a museum piece by 1965.
