“NO PART IN POLITICS”
Former Auditor’s Statement (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 28. "I have never belonged to any political organisation or taken any part in politics,” said Mr C. J. R. Atkin, the former AuditorGeneral, in a statement today. “I have worked under many Governments and endeavoured to serve each of them to the best of my ability. “For 14 years while in the Treasury I gave of my best to the Labour Government and can not therefore understand why the present attack is being made on me.
“Mr Nash is reported as having stated in the House yesterday: ’lt Xvas unfortunate that this year’s Auditor-General report was not the work of the current AuditorGeneral, but of the former Auditor-General.’ “I did not compile the report nor did I see it until after it was printed. “As was our practice a few paragraphs were drafted throughout the year as the matters arose, but as I have no access to the audit papers I do not know to what extent those rough drafts were used in the final report. “As the Public Accounts were not' completed by Treasury until after I retired, obviously I could not report on them.”
