“Lucky” Tumwald Will Ride Sea Contour

If R. J. Turnwald’s luck holds, Sea Contour will win the Homeby Steeplechase tomorrow. Peter Keith was a chance mount for Turnwald at the Wellington winter meeting, and the Te Rapa jumper won the rich Wellington and Riddiford Steeplechases. Turnwald came to Riccarton this week without a ride in the Homeby Steeples, but he was engaged yesterday to ride Sea Contour. The stable horseman, V. H. Simpson, has passed up the ride, and has switched to Nupla. By doing so Simpson is practically' assured of the ride on Nupla in the Grand National, for which Sea Contour was not nominated. Nupla is one of two members of H. P; Long’s Te Rapa team engaged in the Homeby Steeples. The other is Patrick Molloy, which will be ridden by the stable horseman, G. O. Mudgway. Sea Contour, a successful campaigner over hurdles the last time he was brought to Riccarton. jumped four fences on the trial

steeplechase course at Riccarton yesterday. Ridden by Simpson, he outjumped Saltash (N. T. Cowles) at the first fence, the brush at the top of the straight, and also shaded the Riccarton jumper at the double. The Gull (Mr I. Gliddon) was given the most strenuous test of the jumpers schooled yesterday. He jumped 10 fences. He jumped cleanly, but rather slowly. He is being prepared for the Westenra Cup tomorrow. The only other to jump fences was Dusky Prince. Ridden by his Tauranga trainer, N. Craig, Dusky Prince jumped seven fences, starting and finishing with the double. He shaped well. Bailiff (Simpson) jumped four

hurdles. His jumping was always safe and at times extravagant McKenzie (Simpson) went very keenly in - his run over two hurdles, and his jumping was neat. He is a free-going type of galloper, and is a form runner in the Longbeach Hack Hurdles tomorrow. McKenzie had easy wins in hurdle races at Woodville and Waipukurau in the autumn. He is a four-year-old Revelation gelding from Hastings, where he is trained by his part-owner, D. W. Aiderman. Paper Clip (R. O. Cairns) jumped two hurdles safely. So did Grand Bank, which was ridden by E. B. Skelton.
