Heathcote County News In Brief
The Heathcote County Council agreed that it would support in principle the establishment of a symphony orchestra for Christchurch. There would have to be a further meeting with other local bodies to work out the question of the county's financial contribution on an equitable basis, said the county chairman (Mr R. A. Young).
Summit Road.— After discussion on protecting the Summit road against subdivision and building, it was decided to Increase the council's annual grant to the Summit Road Scenic Society from £5 5s to £lO 10s. Curries Road Bowling Green.— After the "heartiest approval” by the Hillcote Improvement Society of a proposal to establish a bowling green in Curries road, the council decided that it approved the plans for the green and would approach two owners to negotiate for part of their land. °eventy-Year-Oldc Succeed.— "A great performance by the 70 year-olds, wasn't it? The whole 63 got through.” said the chairman commenting on a report that 63 drivers in the county over 70 had been retested for, and passed, their driver’s licences. Of 12 others tested, 11 had passed and one had failed.
County Population.— The county population is shown as 5860 in the Department of Statistics estimate of the population of New Zealand as at April 1.
