Bankrupt Owes £122
A bicycle valued at £3 was the only asset shown in the statement of affairs of Desmond Joseph Roberts, a labourer, at a creditors’ meeting called by the Official Assignee (Mr E. G. Tyler). Roberts was adjudged bankrupt on July 15 with a deficit of £122 12s. No creditors atttended the meeting. Mr K. F. Walker as agent for the Official Assignee agreed to Roberts' offer to pay 10s a week towards his debts.
Replying to questions by Mr Walker, Roberts said he spent only a few shillings a week on tobacco and an occasional drink. His wife handled all the money which was spent on the household and their five children. They had no savings. Because of asthma and bronchitis Roberts was often unable to work for some months each year.
