Squash Rackets CLUB GAMES END

Christchurch A Wins Contest

With a convincing win over Wigram. Christchurch A became the Christchurch squash rackets A grade champions for 1960 when the final Inter-club match of the season was played on Tuesday evening. Wigram, which won the title last year, needed to win outright, but it was no match for Christchurch, and failed to win a match.

Although it is possible that they would have been harder to beat on their own courts, the Wigram players all seemed to be well below form, and they began badly when J. S. Boys was well beaten by M. O. Holdsworth, and G. C. Hubbard lost to G. C. P. Beadel after leading by two sets to one.

Although he is an experienced player, Holdsworth seems to be playing his best squash this season. He was always in command against Boys, and made few mistakes, while varying his game continuously and making good use of the drop shot. Boys was unlucky when he rallied

in the third set. only to break his racket when leading 7-2, and he failed to take another point. Beadel required five sets to beat Hubbard, although he was by far the steadier in the last two sets. Then R. G. Pattinson clinched the match and the championship by winning with surprising ease against S. M. Hope, who in the last round had scored a splendid win over the Christchurch champion. D. J. Triggs. Pattinson was always in command and was in excellent all-round form, but Hope seemed unable to settle down and made many mistakes. With the championship decided H. S. Gair and R. M. Hancock met in perhaps the most interesting match of the evening, Gair winning

in four sets. Leading two sets to love and 8-2, Gair suffered a series of misfortunes and was unlucky to lose the third set. But he showed his superiority by taking the fourth and the match, after trailing 0-6. Results:— R. G. Pattinson beat S. M. Hope, 9-4 9-2 9-5. H. S.’ Gair beat R. M. Hancock Q_Q Q-1 0-1 n Q-fi M.
