Moriori Designs on Karaka Trees,” by Miss Christina Jefferson in her Polynesian Society publication, says an article in the annual report of the Historic Places Trust. The possibilities of creating reserves to preserve the trees .had been discussed but the cost of fencing and shelter belts was almost prohibitive, it said. “In light of the success of Mr and Mrs P. J. O’Brien, then of Auckland, with making moulds of the rock carvings of the Kaingaroa State forest and at Kohi gorge, it was decided to arrange for similar work on selected trees in the Chatham Islands.
