HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME FOR N.I.

Major WorktOn Bay Of Plenty Project (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 20. The first major work on the Matahdna hydro-electric project on the Rangitaiki riper, six miles from Te Teko, in tbesßsy of Plenty has begun. About 40 feet of the 700 footlong pilot tunnel, which will provide ventilation for the main 30 foot-diameter tunnel, has been driven into rock. Earth-moving machines will soon begin shifting 100,000 cubic yards of pumice to provide the downstream opening for the tunnel. Matahina is scheduled to begin producing 78,000 kilowatts in 1965 and the estimated cost is £8 million. Because the Rangitaiki river is subject to quick floods, the spillway will be the largest in the North Island—l2o feet wide and capable of discharging water to a depth of 45 feet The dam will be the highest in the North Island at 198 feet. It will contain 2,800,000 cubic yslrds of spoil.
