FAULTY SEWERS CAUSE THREAT

“School Pupils Will Be Sent Home” (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON N„ July 18. The Ramgikea School Committee has threatened to send all the children home if the school sewage system breaks down again. The school is near the Royal New Zealand Air Force station, Ohakea. The threat was made in a-let-ter to the Wanganui Education Board at its meeting today. The committee stated that it would not help to maintain the present sewage system in future. Earlier the committee had requested substantial repairs be made to the school’s septic tank, as frequent blockages took place. The request was considered unjustified by the authorities and the repairs Were refused. “We are not prepared to repair any further breakdowns,” stated the letter from the committee. “We will not let the system be a charge on free labour any longer. “If any more breakdowns occur we will do nothing. We will inform the headmaster that he is to send the children home from school, and will notify the Education Board and the Health Department." The letter denied that whole school lunches and whole toilet rolls had been recovered from the drainage system. The board decided to arrange a meeting with the resident Ministry of Works’ engineer and to have discussions on 'the school site.
