EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS
No Comment By Chamber
Any comment or recommendation on educational standards or the school system generally, in the form of submissions to the Commission on Education, was not within the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce’s function, it was decided when the chamber’s council met last evening. Possible submissions which the Canterbury chamber might make through the Associated Chambers of Commerce were being discussed, The removal of import or exchange control on educational requirements, including text books, was favoured. It was agreed that schools experienced considerable difficulty in importing such items as scientific equipment. The cost of removal of import control on such items would be comparatively trivial on a national basis. Regarding private contributions towards educational expenses, It was reported that a circular had already been sent to members of the chamber for their written comments. particularly with reference to deductions for income tax and freedom from death duty. Their replies would be discussed at a future committee meeting and then brought before the council.
