White, of Stratford, reports to the Government on matters con- “ cerning school cadets. >f The committee was informed s that the strength of the School s Cadet Corps on April 1 this year was 1048 officers and 51,295 cadets. In 1955 there were 807 officers and e 38,032 cadets, and the figures for I- 1959 were 1015 and 46,321. The number of cadet units also e showed increases, from 138 in 1955 , r to 173 to |959 and 178 this year, d The annual rate of increase >t since 1955 has been eight in the .- case of units, 48 for officers and 2652 for cadets.

The direct cost of maintaining ; the corps has increased from £95,324 in 1956 to £120,875 last year, and in estimated figure for the present year of £126,906. One • of the biggest increases here is under the heading of clothing, costs for which are estimated to increase by more than £4OOO this year. Of the present strength in .the corps, 829 officers and 43,040 cadets belong to Army cadet units, 24 1 officers and 562 cadets to Navy and 195 officers and 7603 cadets to the 1 Air Training Corps. Of lhe 178 units, the Army has 173, and there, are five units with air training only. Specialist sub-units total 392. Apart from Navy and Air Training Corps, these include artillery, armour, engineers, signals. Army Service Corps, medical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, machine-gun, mortar and intelligence ■ units.
