STEEPLES AT AVONDALE

Sabre Picked ToWin

•’The Press'* Special Service AUCKLAND, July 1. The main attractions on the first day of the Avondale Jockey Club’s winter meeting tomorrow will be the Rawson Handicap and the President’s Handicap. Other races of some consequence will be the Mount Albert Steeplechase and the Windsor Hurdles.

It will take a good stayer to win the Rawson Handicap and on that account Red Habit is in strong favour.

When the ground becomes very heavy Red Habit seems to go best and the indications arq that tomorrow’s going will be to his liking. Today it was very holding after a period of wet weather. ,

The hardest for Red Habit to beat might be News Ventura. Pulupita and Uppercut. The Rawson Handicap will be the first leg of the double.

Lampada, Phoenician, The Answer, Lord Oman and Seafarer are notable in a useful field of wet-weather sprinters for the second leg, the President’s Handicap.

Lord Oman, which-1« prepared by T. J. Ingam, of Henderson, but does most* of his fast training work at Avondale, ha® a wide barrier position to overcome in the President’s Handicap but he is likely to go very well all the same. He Is In form and fit.

As they hplcl engagements on «the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting next week. Sabre, Delinquency, Big Chief. Climbing and Cretan are bound to atract much interest. So is Fend a probable candidate for the £2500 Winter Hurdles on the third day at Trentham.
