RACING Wide Representation In Washdyke Double

The South Canterbury Jockey Club will offer, a well-balanced programme on the first day of its winter meethtf at Washayke today. The principle flat races and respective legs of the double will be the Donald Grant Memorial Handicap and the Seadown Handicap. Handicap stayers are catered for in the Donald Grant Memorial Handicap and the open milers will compete in the second leg. Canterbury, Otago and Southland stables are well represented in both races.

Believe Me and Promise, from Wingatui, are two of three last start winner* in the Donald Grant Memorial Handicap. They are expected to do best of five Otago runner* in the field. The Washdyke-trained Rhythm Rein will probably be the most solidly backed light-weight. This will be his first test in open company, but a sequence of four winning run* in hack class and a solid final trial at Washdyke on Thursday indicate that he will not be an easy rival for some of his more heavily-weighted opponents to match.

A Riccarton victory is ' expected to rest with either Kelp or Shoal, which are' both sound in stamina and have the best dorm backgrounds of the local candidates. Shoal is top-weight with 9-8 and Kelp eomes in 231 b below her. Vamoose, whieh is trained by E. A. Winsloe at Gore, might be the best of the Southland representatives. Although his recent • form has not been solid. Vamoose's earlier record as a stayer was very impressive. Cheyenne, which won the Seadown Handicap last year under 9-5. is expected to go close to repeating that success with 21b less in the same race today. Cheyenne is trained at Rtecarton for Mrs L, K. Hi* strongest rivals might be McCool and Kastanea. which are also Riccarton-trained Mighty Son. a stablemate of Believe Me, and the Invercargilltrained Nairn Bridge, may do best of the other*. They both have last start winning form. Ben Ledi, Offend and Royal Halyard have dropped out of the Seadown Handicap. Steeplechase Challenge Renway. a member of H. A Anderton's Wingatui team, is the only scratching in the Timaru Steeplechase but the stable will still ,be represented bv three runners and Sarkey is llkelv to be the favourite. Van Da Hum. - from Washdyke, and the Inver-cargill-trained Baby Toes are expected to be his strongest rivals The Anderton stable will have only Paper Clip to represent it m the Tekapo Hack Hurdles. Pot Luck was not brought to Washdyke with the rest of the team yesterday. Paper Clip is one of the form runners in the field and will probably dispute favourtism with the top-weight. Column. Other detention* in this race are Brookfields Lad and Waikiwi Star, Royal Digit, from Riccarton, and the Ormi-tralned Gold View, are expects# to be the best of the two-year-olds in the Caroline Handicap from whieh Prospero. Luv and Duck*. Lyn Leigh and West Bound have been- scrat-hed. Maiden galloper* are catered for in the Winchester Handicap, and hack sprinter* and milers will contest the Beaeonsfield and Kingsdown Handicaps respectively. Capacity Field . Ab H E 1 Saad - Jenwyn, Also, Crystal Light No Pretender and Sleat have been scratched for the Winchester Handicap there will still be a capacity field of 22 runners. English Prince is the

only runner to have dropped out of the Beaconsfield Hack Handicap, but scratchings have been fairly heavy in the Klngadown Hack Handicap. They Include Flagon, Lord Garnish, Navarone. Corrie Maris, Fine Note. Obeyanoe and Bunair. There were light shower* .in Timaru yesterday morning but the weather cleared later. The rain did not affect the track, which is in good order.
