WOMEN FINED FOR ASSAULT

Hit Bus Driver With Handbags (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 1. An elderly woman and her daughter slapped an Auckland bus driver's face with their handbags and a newspaper, Mr A. A. Coates. S.M., was told in the Magistrate's Court at Auckland today. Vinian Mabel Reha, aged 71, and Annie Jane Lee, aged 48, were charged with assaulting the driver. The accused did not appear. The driver, William Power, said he told the women they would have to pay more or get off the bus when they came to the end of the section for which they had paid. They claimed they were new to the district but, he said, he knew that was wrong. The assault occurred as the women were leaving the bus. Two women witnesses corroborated his story. The accused were convicted and were each fined £4 and costs and witnesses' expenses.
