CIVIC ORCHESTRA PROPOSAL
Heathcote To Attend Meeting The Heathcote County Council has agreed to send two representatives to a meeting of local bodies called for July 19 to discuss financial support for a civic orchestra in Christchurch. It appointed Mr R. A. Young, the county chairman, and Cr. J. C. Holliss to attend. A letter had been received from the Riccarton Borough Council saying that it supported financial assistance for such an orchestra “in principle,” and inviting other local body representatives to attend a meeting, when “an equitable apportionment of costs” could be discussed. . Support for a civic orchestra by the ratepayers’ money was queried by Cr. J. S. Scott. “They should raise their own funds if they want a civic orches> tra,” he suggested. If the orchestra was to be supported by ratepayers’ money, the ratepayers were entitled to object, said Cr. Hollis. “We should go along and hear the proposals,” he said. The council’s representatives to attend the meeting were then appointed.
