“The Free World”

Sir, —There were two manifestations of the editorial function in your issue of June 29 which, taken together, were somewhat disquieting. One was an editorial footnote to a letter from “Academia” which, with the aid of shaky logic, questionable arithmetic, and a disregard of unpleasant facts, administered a haughty rebuke to a critic of the phrase, “free world.” The other was editorial silence on a related matter of supreme importance, the action of the security police reported under the heading. "A Threat to Civil Liberty." This is an issue which strikes at the very root of the claim that "our" world can claim to be free. Not only the Council of Civil Liberties but all who have any regard for New Zealand's political health are entitled to expect some reaction from a, journal wj|h a reputation as deservedly high as "The Press." —Yours; etc, FABIAN. June 30, 1960.
