Speed Limits

Sir,—lt is gratifying to see that so many responsible persons, such as Ministers, local bodies, and the AA, are recommending an increase in the speed limits on the open road. Some advocate an increase to 55 miles an hour, but this would be a waste of time, for most traffic seems to travel about 60 miles an hour. If the limit were raised to the latter figure it would be more satisfactory. On some of the roads, such as the main south, west and north roads, there could well be no limit at all. A few weeks ago statistics were published showing that only a small percentage of accidents occurred in the higher speed group, thus proving that we law-breakers who have been travelling over 50 in the country during the last few years, are not responsible for many accidents.— Yours, etc, COUNTRY TRAVELLER.
