meC 11 P m IoNDON. July L Albert Gauden, aged 53, in Court on a drunken driving charge at Birmingham yesterday called from the dock for a glass of water. . ' ~ , A police officer started pouring wrteT from a carafe, "Just a drop, please," said Gauden, . Then, as the glass was handed to him. he took a bottle of whisky from his pocket and unscrewed the stopper, reported the "Daily Mirror.” Before he could pour himself a drink the dock officer grabbed the bottle from him.

“Hey.” said Gauden. “there is no law against me having a drink." “Yes there is." said the Magistrate. “Then all I can say is that it must be a law of your own. > sir.” g As the last witness was giving y evidence Gauden glanced at his s wrist watch and said to the witness; “Make it snappy, please. g They’re open now.” ■ Then he pulled out a cigar case, selected a cigar and unwrapped ilt But be told the dock offif cer, he was “only getting it . ready.” e He pleaded not guilty and was sent for trial on the charge. I He was given back his whisky ias he left the Court “I was just thirsty.’’ he said.
