“Large Market In Australia” There is potential for greater exports of New Zealand fish to Australia, according to “Export News,” the Department of Industries and Commerce newsletter. The average consumption of fish in Australia is 91b a head, and 51b is frozen. The landed weight of fish in New Zealand is 201 b a year. The increased iemand has been caused by an increasing population, as the annual production in Australia has remained constant over the last few years. Exports of. fish from New Zealand to Australia have averaged £490,000 over the last few years—about 22J per cent, of total fish imports in 1959. The main types exported last year were tarakihi (£169,000), snapper (£64,000), sole £52,000), gurnard (£52,000), white fillets (£43,000), and blue cod (£35,000). Other main competitors on the Australian import market are South Africa, Britain, and Denmark.
