CIVIL DEFENCE BODY
Talks In City Next Week First steps in the formation of a civil defence organisation will be taken in Christchurch next Thursday when the regional civil defence commissioner for the South Island (Brigadier J. T. Burrows) will meet civic leaders and council heads and the local heads of several Government departments. Brigadier Burrows’s appointment was announced some time ago. After the recent seismic tidal disturbances, the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. H. P. Smith) said the City Council recognised the need for a civil defence organisation which could cope with emergencies, but had been waiting for a lead from the Government Jhe appointment of regional commissioners had hastened the need for a meeting.
Next week’s meeting will be attended by Brigadier Burrows, the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), Cr. Smith, the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast), the City Engineer (Mr E. Somers), the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond), the Medical Officer of Health (Dr. A. Douglas) and representatives of the Ministry of Works, Post and Telegraph Department and possibly other Government departments.

Morel. R. J. Spence, B. W. Fahey, D. E. Wildbore.
