PROGRESS ON OVERBRIDGE

Contractors’ New Target Date The contractors working on the Colombo street railway overbridge and the bridge approaches are now working to a new target date of July 21, but 4t is only a target and dependent entirely on the weather. Mr E. Somers, the City Engineer, said yesterday that both contractors had made very good progress on the job, and he was now hoping that the bridge would be' open early in August. July was a notoriously bad month tor weather, Mr Somers said, and everything now depended on the weather. Originally it. was expected that it would be September before the bridge was opened, but taking advantage of the fine, dry spell, the builders were able to make much greater progress. The recent wet weather delayed progress a little. If the contractors’ target of July 21 could be met no-one would be happier than the Sydenham shopkeepers who have complained that they have lost business through Colombo street being closed and traffic being diverted.
