Cricket SECOND TEST

Throwing By

Griffin

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 23.

The South African fast bowler Griffin was no-balled five times for throwing when the second test began at Lord’s today. The umpire, Frank Lee, no-balled Griffin on two consecutive balls in the opening overs, once after lunch and twice in Griffin's third spell.

Mr Lee is the sixth English umpire to call the South African for throwing. England was two for 114 at stumps.

Five times rain and bad light interrupted a gloomy day’s cricket, which began forty-five minutes late because of the rain. Altogether three hours and threequarters of play were lost. M. C. Cowdrey won the toss and England went in to bat in the misty, humid atmosphere on a pitch that offered every encouragement to the fast bowlers.

The feature of the day’s play was a dashing 56 from E. R. Dexter, who, with R. Subba Row. put on 96 for the second wicket to pull England up after a bad start.

Cowdrey went foY 4 after snicking a rising ball from Griffin to R. A. McLean in slips. The first no-balling incident came soon after Dexter joined Subba Row. While Griffin was bowling uncertainly N. A. T. Adcock at the other end was pitching short, making many balls rear over the batsmen’s heads.

After lunch Dexter displayed superb form, hitting the bowlers for his 50 in an hour and forty minutes. But when he had to play himself in again after the fourth rain interruption he was caught off the’ second ball he received. -Dexter was at the crease a little for than two hours for his 56, which included seven 4’s.

Subba Row played a fine backstopping innings for 36 not out. K. F. Barrington was with him, not out 5, at the close of play. Only two other players have been no-balled for throwing in test matches. In 1898 Ernest Jones, the Australian, was called in a test at Melbourne against England. In 1954, Tony Lock, England spinner, was no-balled in the first test against the West Indies in Jamaica.
