Badminton SECOND-ROUND MATCHES
Railway Only Unbeaten Team
Railway is now the only unbeaten team in the Canterbury Badminton Association's inter-club A grade competition. After its win over Knox last week Railway beat Christchurch last evening in a very closely-con-tested match, with the final score at 179 points to 161, after games had been tied at 8-all. Railway was off to a very good start in this match, winning the second, third and fourth' mixed doubles and the top women's singles to take a 4-0 lead. Christchurch fought back with a very narrow win in the top mixed doubles and two men's singles victories, and after all the mixed doubles and singles had been played the score was 6-all. The men's and women’s doubles went as expected, and Railway had the advantage on the count-back of points. The top Christchurch men, R. K. Macefield and D. B. Reid, were in good form to win their singles and men’s doubles comfortably. Against A. G. Duckmanton, Macefleld was always in control. Duckmanton was playing well, but Macefleld’s recoveries and court coverage against Duckmanton’s best shots discouraged the Railway player. In a match between Canterbury’s
top two women players Mrs G. Middleburg beat Mrs A. Ryan without the loss of a point. Mrs Middleburg showed good control with her drop-shots, bringing Mrs Ryan into the net and flicking the shuttle high over her head to the back of the court. The consistent Mrs M. Miller was too good for Miss E. Reaston in the second women's singles. Closest Match The closest match of the evening was in the top mixed doubles, where L. Mangos and Mrs Middleburg pressed the experienced combination of Macefield and Mrs Ryan. Macefield and Mrs Ryan have played together in inter-club matches for many seasons, and led for most of the match. Mangos and Mrs Middleburg, playing together for the first time, caught the Christchurch pair at 14-all. and actually led at 16-14 before their opponents took a 17-16 win.
Like Mrs Miller, M. Ford won his three matches for Railway, as he did in the previous week's match against Knox. Results were:— Men’s Singles.—A. G. Duckmanton lost to R. K. Macefield, 6-15; L. Mangos lost to D. B. Reid, 1-15; D. Forbes lost to B. Wylie, 12-15; M. Ford beat T. Skerton, 15-2. Women's Singles.—Mrs G. Middleburg beat Mrs A. Ryan, 11-0; Mrs M. Miller beat Miss E. Railway won by 179 points to 181.
