CHALLENGE TO SOVIET
Chinese Views On Disarming
(Rec. 10 p.m.)
GENEVA. June 23,
The British Minister of State. Mr David Orsby-Gore. challenged Russia today to repudiate a Chines.l Communist view on the new, Soviet disarmament plan. Mr Ormsby-Gore told the 10-‘ national disarmament conference that a leading Chinese official in Peking had described the plan" as a Communist trap to isolate, the United States. , ■- Russia, as represented by Mr Valerian Zorin, had nothing to say. reported American Associated-* Press; but he was observed, scribbling notes furiously as Mr Orsmby-Gore spoke.
Russia has proposed that dis-, armament should begin with the destruction of all missiles antf other means of delivery, including' planes, ships and artillery, and the liquidation of all foreign military bases.
Mr Ormsby-Gore produced all the conference a dispatch from the British Embassy in Peking. It quoted the vice-chairman otthe all-China Federation of Trade Unions, Mr Liu Chang-sheng as,.' saying on June 8 that the Communist countries did not expect the West to take the new Soviet disarmament plan seriously, Communist China supported th/ plan, said Mr Liu, but “it is in* conceivable that imperialism will accept a proposal for general and complete disarmament. “The purpose of putting forward such a proposal is to unmask the aggressive and bellicose nature of imperialism in order to isolate, as far as possible, the imperialist bloc headed by th/ United States, so that they wi'l not dare to unleash a war lightly." Mr Ormsby-Gore asked Mr Zorin: “Do you agree with thfif statement by your Chinese allies?” Mr Zorin said nothing.
