MANPOWER FOR INDUSTRY
Two Opposition Questions
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 23.
Two questions about New Zealand’s manpower shortage came from Opposition members at question time in the House of Representatives today.
Mr D. J. Carter (Opposition. Raglan) asked the Minister of Immigration (Mr Hackett) whether, in view of the drastic shortage of labour disclosed by a survey of the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association, he would give fresh consideration to his immigration policy and bring in at least the number of migrants being assisted when he took office. The Prime Minister (Mr Nash) was asked by Mr N. L. Shelton (Opposition, Rangitikei) whether the increase of 1.89 per cent, in population last year, compared with an average of 2.24 per cent, for the 10-year period, was attributable to the Government’s restrictive immigration policy, and if the drop was likely to hamper New Zealand’s industrial development
