CHARTWELL INQUIRY
Part Of Film Missing
,».z. Sydney racing circles today discussed the news that an important piece of evidence in the Chartwell inquiry is missing. It is a section of the officialrace film of the Encourage Handicap at Randwick on May 21. which is used by the stipendiary stewards. The New Zealand-bred Chartwell finished fourteenth in that race, starting at 40/1. , A week later. Chartwell landed a huge, betting pltinge by winning a’ aim liar race at Randwick. In this event, be was backed from 11/1 to 9/4 favourite. -jTbe Australian Jockey Club stewards already have disqualified the trainer. R. f W. Roden, iand jockey, D. Weir, for 12 months after a retrospective inquiry into the running of Chartwell- on May 21. Both have appealedl„. Several prominent Sydney racing men have commented that a race can be lost in a very short distance and the absence of a section of film of the race must have hampered the stewards in making a definite judgment on the handling of Chartwell. They said that if the missing section of the film does cover a vital section of the rgce it is not fair to Roden and Weir or the stewards if it cannot be produced at the hearing of the appeals. An A.J.C. spokesman said the missing section of the film does not cover a vital stage of the race. It is the club’s practice to allow a Sydney television station to use the official film in a sporting programme.
