Bermuda Socks For Girls In Wellington High School
Bermuda socks, so much cheaper and, some say, smarter than long brown winterweight stockings, have appealed to girl pupils of Wellington Technical College to the extent that they have asked permission to wear them during the second term, and have practically persuaded the authorities into agreement. In Christchurch, these kneelength socks are extremely popular among young girls for weekend wear. Will they wear them to school? A reporter who inquired whether any pupils had suggested this, met with cryptic answers from the principals;—
There was a brief “No comment” reply from Christchurch West High School; and the same from Avonside Girls’ High School with the added. “I have far more urgent matters to attend to;” “The matter hasn’t arisen at this school,” from Girls’ High School, and “I haven’t heard anything about it so far” from one or two others.
For more than 100 years in New Zealand, long woollen stockings have been the regulation wear (regardless of itch) for schoolgirls. Lately a few schools have allowed stockings of nylon stretch fabric to be worn—they were more expensive but more comfortable with their smoother texture. Even so, the girls have had to exercise care to see that ladders and holes do not start.
Bermuda hose, girls have found, is more durable. It does not ladder and is just as warm as nylon. The fashion also eliminates' the need for suspenders, which can be rather a trial to those who play sport in morning breaks and lunch hours.
In Wellington, staff members voted for the Bermuda socks as did the parents. All the girls are waiting for is to see if the dir-
ector of the college considers the fashion will last.
So far, the socks have been worn for two winters. Short white sockettes have been worn during summer terms for generations.
