RETIREMENT FORECAST
Commissioner Of Works
"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, June 15. The early retirement of the Commissioner of Works (Mr F. M. H. Hanson) is being forecast in political circles. At the same time it has become known that the Government is studying alternative forms of administration for the Ministry of Works. It is considered likely that on Mr Hanson's retirement, one-man control of the huge department by a professional engineer as Commissioner of Works will cease. Mr Hanson will be 65 next month and some observers feel
that this may be the time for the announcement of his retirement. A brilliant engineer, who has had a spectacular career, Mr Hanson has also at times been a controversial figure while serving under both Labour and National governments. The Commissioner of Works is appointed by the GovernorGeneral on the advice of the Government and because of this appointment is not subject to the normal Public Service rules which compel retirement at the age of 65, or after 40 years' service. It is understood that when Mr Hanson was appointed by the National Government an agreement was made that he would serve for a specified period.
