SALE ENDS IN CHAOS
Women Take Over Warehouse
(New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, June 10.
A clearance sale at an open warehouse in Heretaunga street, Hastings, turned into “an organised shop-lift on a grand scale,” the proprietor, Mr H. Wong, said today. He estimates that he lost from £2OO to £3OO in two hours. Mr Wong said that as soon as he opened the doors, women rushed in from all directions.
“The assistants were pushed back behind the counters, and there was absolute chaos,” said Mr Wong. “Women were diving in the windows, picking up heaps of clothes, and pushing their way into the changing rooms. There they tried on clothes, and when they were satisfied, put their own clothes on over the top, and lefit the shop without paying. “There were 10 dozen pairs of stockings in the sale, but we can only account for six pairs being paid for,” said Mr Wong.
