Unwashed Army Brains

The Army has no intention of providing courses for officers to prepare them for brainwashing should they fall into enemy hands. Such courses provided by the Australian Army have drawn criticism from psychiatrists. Criticism of similar courses has also been voiced in Britain and the United States. “We haven’t given any thought to it," said the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly) when the Australian report was referred to him. “There won’t be any, as far as I’m concerned.” Search Communications Reliable radio signals have been transmitted in rough hill areas in the King Country by the Taumarunui branch of the New Zealand Radio Amateurs’ Club. These signals were transmitted and received in the first phase of a now-completed project, designed to . assess the usefulness in the area'trf frequencies well above those of taxis and aeronautical services. With the -use of a different frequency each way, continuous duplex radio-tele-phonic communication was achieved. It is thought that such experiments may be useful for communications in search and rescue work.—(P.A.) American Hunt Master The master of a Californian hunt, Mr Tim Durant, who arrived in Auckland on Sunday, will ride with the Pakuranga Hunt today. Mr Durant is master of the West Hills Hunt Club, Los Angeles, and is a former president of the United Hunt Club, the biggest in the world. He has ridden in hunts and steeplechases in Britain and on the Continent. Mr Durant, who is 60, has had a varied career. He was Charlie Chaplin’s representative with United Artists from 1938 to 1950, and from 1950 until his retirement he was a member of the New York Stock Exchange and a director of the American Totalisator Company. Birthday Honours Queen’s Birthday honours for New Zealanders will be announced at the end of this week. Release of the New Zealand list is synchronised with the announcement of the awards in Britain. At noon yesterday a 21-gun salute was fired from Point Jerningham, Wellington, to mark New Zealand’s celebration of the day.—(P.A.) Unwilling Patient A five-year-old boy disappeared two hours and a half after he was admitted to the Green Lane Hospital. Auckland, yesterday afternoon. He was found four hours later in Waikowhai, five miles away, unharmed. He is Graeme Douglas Phipps, of Te Puna road. Tauranga. Yesterday was his fifth birthday.—(P.A.) Holiday Weather Wellington shivered in the coldest day of the winter yesterday, and holiday activities were marred by rain which fell steadily all day. The temperature at 3 p.m. was 46deg, and remained fairly constant, according to the Weather Office. Rain was falling over the whole of the North Island yesterday afternoon. It had eased over the South Island, though there was still scattered light rain in North Canterbury. Marlborough and Nelson. The bad weather is expected to continue over most of the Nortn Island today. The South Island should be mainly fair on the western side, with cloudy conditions and light showers in Canterbury and Marlborough.—(P.A.)
