FIRE AT LEVIN
Children Evacuated From Buildin"
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 6.
Crippled children and young patients were pushed out of windows when a fire broke out last night at the Levin Hospital farm. About 10.30 p.m., attendants evacuated 17 children. The fire started in a linen room at the hospital and the heat was blistering the varnished roof of the children’s ward when the automatic alarm roused the attendants.
Unable to get the children down the smoke-filled passage the attendants smashed windows and passed the children outside The hospital fire brigade was helped by the Levin town brigade and the outbreak was controlled. The childen, most of whom were very young and either intellectually retarded or crippled, were taken to another villa and put to bed within 15 minutes. |
