Indoor Basketball WOMEN’S GAMES
Overlanders Show Good Form
Overlanders had a hard game against Ranglora and only in the latter stages asserted any superiority when the women’s indoor basketball competitions were continued at the Crichton Cobbers' Club last evening. Rex A beat University in a lowscoring match. Rebels showed allround superiority and gave Teachers’ College few opportunities to score.
Results:— Rebels A 29 v. Teachers* College 9. Rex A 23 v. University 9. Overlanders 27 v. Rangiora 21. Overlanders v. Ranglora A In one of the best displays this season, Overlanders maintained steady pressure to beat Ranglora. A quick interception by J. McConnan followed by a good lay-up by J. Bonring opened the scoring for Ranglora. With- P. Hillier, N. Tregoning, and L. Fitz Gerald in form, passing round the Rangiora zone was snappy with good moving and rebounding by Hillier giving Overlanders ample opportunities to score.
Rangiora kept a very steady zone defence, with V. Fiddler and J. Lundy intercepting any stray passes and scoring frequently from fast breaks. For most of the game the pace was fast, with the teams scoring goal for goal. Good rebounding by P. Hillier and L. Fitz Gerald kept the Overlanders forwards supplied with the ball, and the experience of N. Tregoning and Fitz Gerald paid dividends for Overlanders. J. Bonring, Fiddler and Lundy played steadily throughout for Rangiora and were unfortunate not to find the basket on many occasions. For Overlanders, a solid zone and steady passing brought the score up. and in the last few minutes many goals were scored to take the final score to 27-21 in its favour. Top scorers for Overlanders were L. Fitz Gerald (8), N. Tregoning (6), and for Rangiora J. Lundy (12) and V. Fiddler (6). Rex A v. University In a match marked by many infringements and fouls, Rex A won a game against University. Both teams were slow to score, and neither seemed able to take advantage of the wide zone defence played, tending to shoot long shots from well out, only to lose possession.
D. Fleete and N. Cummings combined well for Rex in the second half and scored some good baskets but the shooting was on the whole, inaccurate. J. King and L. Pierce guarded and rebounded well for Rex throughout. University kept ■ wide zone defence, and in the second half set moves attempted by Rex with centre Fleete cutting well, paid dividends. M. Elms played a steady game for University, who could find little combination on attack and were well beaten, 23-9. Top scorers for Rex were D. Fleete (11) and N. Cummings (9). For University, M. Elms scored four goals. Rebels A v. Teachers’ College The experienced Rebels team gave the youthful Teachers’ College team few opportunities. A tight zone defence kept College well out, and lack of penetration forced long shots at goal. Rebel’s guards dominated the rebounds to give the team ample control and supply of the ball. Quick passing In and out of the zone gave the forwards, J. Phillips and H. Johnson, plenty of opportunities to score.
Long passes by College were quickly intercepted and College attempts at fast breaks were nulffied. For College. A, Blair and P. Coltman tried hard, but could offer little opposition to an experienced Rebels team, which took the game. 29 to 9:
Topscorers for Rebels were H. Johnson (15) and J. Phillips (8); and for Teachers’ College, P. Coltman (4).
