SEVERN WILDFOWL TRUST
Breeding Of Ducks
From N.Z.
"The Press" Special Service ROTORUA, June 6.
Four shoveller and two blue ducks are special guests of the Department of Internal Affairs game farm at Ngongotaha. Within a few days they will be flown to the Severn Wildfowl Trust at Slimbridge. England. The trust, directed by the naturalist and painter, Mr Peter Scott, was formed to protect and breed as many species of waterfowl as possible. The shoveller duck, which demands a high protein diet of insects, is difficult to rear in captivity. This is thought to be the ‘’rst time for many years that birds of this breed have been sent overseas. They are being fed on a diet of minced meat.
The blue duck lives only in mountain streams. Three years ago. two pair were sent to the trust, but three of them have since died.
The department has received advice from the trust that the New Zealand scaup, or black teal, and the native grey duck were bred at Slimbridge last year. The trust hopes to breed the native brown duck there this year.
