PAY OF HOUSE SURGEONS
Increase Likely
(From <Jur Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON. June 6. When the Cabinet meets tomorrow it is expected that measures recommended to ease the chronic shortage of house surgeons in hospitals throughout the Dominion will be discussed and approved.
The Cabinet Is expected to approve higher salaries for third and later years as junior medical officers. It is considered likely that improved amenities for married house surgeons willbe considered. The aim is to encourage young doctors to spend more time in hospital training. This expected Cabinet action to improve hospital staffing arises from a conference called by the Minister of Health (Mr Mason) earlier this year gmong representatives of the Hospital Boards’ Association, medical superintendents of hospitals, and officers of the Health Department. When he had received the report of this conference. Mr Mason consulted an advisory committee on medical officers’ salaries before submitting firm proposals to the Cabinet. It, is understood that salaries approved by the Cabinet prljl become effective from January I, 1981.
