Hybrid Duck

i\ large hybrid duck, a cross between a mallard and muscovy. has been sent to the Auckland war memorial museum. The bird was shot at the opening of the shooting season at Churchill, near Rangirin “This is the third muscovy-mallard cross reported to a New Zealand museum, the earlier specimens being in the Canterbury and the Dominion museum,” said Dr G Archey, director of the museum today The bird shot at Churchill was a rich mottled brown with a darker head and lighter below. It was large, about the size of the muscovy, and a very handsome bird. Dr Archey said these hybrids had been frequently noted elsewhere since 1823, and over a wide area, including Jamaica. Chile, China, and Madagascar.—(PA.)
