TENANCY ACT National Party Plans Change

(New Zealand Press Assoctatton) WHAKATANE, June 2.

The National Party will, if it becomes the Government, amend the Tenancy Act so that the protection now given to existing tenants will be retained for them, but will not be given to new tenants after the premises become vacant.

This was said by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) when he visited Whakatane last night on his meet-the-people tour of the country. He said that a National Government would continue the progressive liberalisation of the Tenancy Act with a view to its abolition as the housing position would permit. “The last National Government. while giving fair protection to tenants, restored to property owners greater freedom in the management of their own property,’’ Mr Holyoake said. The next step in its policy would be to amend the act to provide that, while protection would be retained for existing tenants, it would not apply to new tenants after the premises became vacant.
