ALTERNATE-DAY PARKING
Traffic Congestion
Relief
Alternate-day parking, by by which kerbside parking is only allowed on one side of a street on alternate days, was suggested as a means of relieving traffic congestion for Christchurch at last evening's meeting of the Chamber of Commerce council.
Explaining the scheme, Mr L. S. Milburn, chairman of the chamber's transport committee, said that on a busy street, such as Colombo street, parking would only be allowed on one side on the second, fourth, and sixth of the month (and so on), and on the opposite side on the first, third, and fifth of the month, etc. Commercial vehicles and others making deliveries in the street would be allowed kerbside parking while doing so. The scheme had a lot to recommend it in Christchurch, where the trouble was not double-park-ing, but double double-parking, said Mr H. E. Radley.
Alternate-day parking operated quite well in England, Mr Radley said. “There things are only resisted because they are new innovations,” he said. Night-time commercial deliveries, or up to 9 p.m., and between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., might also help to reduce Christchurch traffic congestion, it was suggested. The meeting decided to discuss the suggestions at a later date.
