ONE AWARD IN AN INDUSTRY
Minister Declines To Comment
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 2.
The Minister of Labour (Mr Hackett) neither confirmed nor denied today a report that an amendment would be made to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act to provide for all workers in a particular industry to be brought under the same award regardless of what union they belonged to. The report, which says that trade union circles are “buzzing” over the suggested amendment, adds that it is not likely that any industry will be brought into the ’scheme until both employers and workers concerned have been consulted.
It is understood that details of the amendment have been sent to the Federation of Labour and that the Secretary of Labour (Mr H. L. Bockett) has said that the main reason for the amendment was to minimise disruption once an iron and steel industry was established in New Zealand employing workers belonging to a variety of unions.
