WEATHER SYSTEM PHOTOGRAPHED
Satellite’s Pictures Sent To NX
(New Zealand Press Association)' WELLINGTON, June 1.
The Meteorological Service has received photographs taken from 450 miles above the earth from the United States weather reporting satellite, Tiros I. One picture shows a weather system affecting New Zealand and covering an area between Auckland, Fiji, and New Caledonia. .
Dr. J. F. Gabites of the Meteorological Service said today that at the time the picture was taken the Matua was battling a 45-knot gale between New Zealand and Fiji in the centre of a stoftn, and rain was falling over hundreds of miles of the area shown in the photograph. “This is a wonderful new tool for meteorologists,” he said. “It is showing us things that we could only deduce with a great deal of uncertainty up till now from our very meagre network of observation stations. “This shows complete weather systems out over the oceans and desert areas where we cannot hope to get a detailed picture from ground observations.”
