GASWORKERS’ FEDERATION
Canterbury Union’s Decision To Join
The Canterbury Gasworkers Union will join a federation of New Zealand gasworkers when it is formed. This was announced yesterday by the secretary (Mr M. Rhodes) who said that the decision was made at a meeting of the executive in Christchurch this The proposal to .form a New Zealand gasworkers’ federation was discussed recently when Mr T. Hill, representing the Wellington gasworkers, visited union officials in Christchurch. It was expected that Mr Hill would make a further visit to explain the proposed federation to members of the Canterbury union, Mr Rhodes said. Negotiations for a new award for Wellington gasworkers, scheduled to begin this month, would probably be withdrawn pending a planning of a national award, Mr Rhodes believed. Auckland, Wellington, and Gisborne gasworkers had already agreed to join the proposed federation. At present there were separate awards for each area. Under the proposed arrangements, unions would have local autonomy but wages and working conditions would be matters for national treatment. One effect of a national award would be to align working conditions in private gas companies with those in municipal authorities, Mr Rhodes said.
