AVOCA VALLEY CROPS

Assessment Of Storm Damage

After representations he had made to the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Skinner), the member of Parliament for Lyttelton (Mr N. E. Kirk) said on Saturday that market gardeners in the Avoca Valley who had suffered damage in the hailstorm earlier this year would have their representations considered by a committee to be set up by the Department of Agriculture. It had been thought by some departmental officers that because of the limited area which was damaged by the storm the formation of a committee was hardly warranted, said Mr Kirk. However, the Minister considered that although the area was limited the setting up of a committee was the fairest way of assessing the position. The membership of the committee would probably be announced next week, he said.

Help given in similar cases of storm damage had usually consisted of overdraft guarantees to enable growers to recover from the financial blow.
