Melbourne Cup Is Mission

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, May 16. The New Zealand stayer, Sparkler, which has just been bought by three Sydney businessmen, is to be set for this year's Metropolitan and the £25,000 Centenary Melbourne Cup Sparkler will reach Sydnev on May 27 by ship and will be in the hands of the leading Sydney trainer, T. J. Smith, who was sent to New Zealand specially to purchase the four-year-old.

Smith, today, would not disclose the price he paid for Sparkler, nor the names of the part-owners. All Smith would say was: “He was cheaper than I thought.” Sparkler, one of New Zealand's top stayers, ha* been spelling. Smith said Sparkler would not be sent to Brisbane for either the coining Brisbane Cup or Doomben meetings.
