Washdyke Colt Likely Bargain
Wandering Willie, winner of the Trial Stakes at Ashburton, is one of the early winners for former champion Mainbrace m the South Island. He cost Mrs W. Pateman, of Timaru, 210gns at the national sales in 1958 and shapes as if he will be a bargain.
Wandering Willie was selected and is trained by E. J. Ellis, of Washdyke, who has a good record with bargain-price purchases at the national sales. William Paul and Port Boy, both New Zealand Derby winners in the Pateman colours, were also bought cheaply at Trentham.
Wandering Willie is a powerful chestnut colt. His dam, Samaritan (by Gilpin) won two races. So did his grandam Exemplary, a daughter of Broiefort. The good sprinter Donegal Bay has been one of the most successful members of this family in recent times.
