Campus Trend In American Girls’ Fashions
[By PATSY ANN DAVIDSON]
NEW YORK. Campus fashions are spreading to teenage girls throughout the United States. American students are often a race apart. They dress to suit themselves and their scheme is so sensible that even non-students under 20 are taking up the trends. Shortie tops which team with skirts and slacks make campus fashion news. They can be knitted, run up on a sewing machine, or bought off-the-peg. Colleges have a new gimmick every term and “boy” shirts seem to be the stunt now. One pretty Paisley printed wool skirt I noticed matched to a waist high top in green, was worn with a “boy” shirt in cream.
This outfit was worn with cream wool stockings and flat shoes, and attractive it looked too. The wearer assured me that the skirt did double duty. After dark it was worn with an evening sweater.
Every girl loves a pleated skirt. Partly because it is comfortable, partly because it hides youthful figure faults, and mostly because it swings as she walks. I saw a red and white pepita check pleated skirt worn with a knitted red jerkin, bold with
its brass buttons. The jerkin had a V-neck, which showed off the masculine shirt blouse. Knee-high Socks Some college girls work during vacations. For them tartan two-pieces come' to the fore. Tops of these are high necked, sleeveless, and worn over a longsleeved blouse. For campus, the outfit is worn with knee-high white socks and flat shoes; for office nylons replace “kneehighs,” and medium heels are worn instead of flat. For evenings out, the twopiece is worn without the shirt, and ornamented with the most striking (and most expensive) item of costume jewellery the wearer can produce. High heels are also worn with it then for sophistication.
All of which proves that the teenager in New York knows her own mind, buys wisely, youthfully and enthusiastically.
